PCAT (PreCast Advanced Track) is a new concept in railway construction and challenges the traditional engineering method of supporting railway track on loose ballast. Whilst the loose ballast method has some advantages in that it has a relatively low first cost, it has some very significant drawbacks, including:
-
Enormous on-going maintenance costs & liability
- The ballast must be completely replaced periodically with new primary aggregates (huge carbon impact).
- Unbound ballast has limited suitability (increased maintenance requirements) for High Speed Rail.
- Unbound ballast is unsuitable for Ultra High Speed Rail
PCAT is the new solution to cost effective construction of new railways and for ballast replacement projects on existing railways. PCAT provides the obvious solution (replacing unbound ballast with a low maintenance slab track) but also addresses the traditional drawbacks of slab based systems – notably speed of construction and capability to be maintained.
